3M Singapore is a wholly owned subsidiary of 3M Company. 3M Singapore markets nearly all of the company’s major products. Major product categories include industrial tapes and adhesives, abrasives, flexible circuits, safety and security solutions, RFID solutions, commercial graphics, reflective film, homecare and stationery products, and health care solutions.

The company serves a multitude of consumer and industrial markets and is a market leader in many of these markets, which include electronics, oil and gas, shipbuilding, automotive aftermarket, construction, health care, semiconductor, aerospace, and consumer markets.

When 3M first established itself in Singapore in 1966, it started in a small rented office in Trafalgar Street with eight employees. As our business began to develop and expand, we gradually increased our presence. In 1970, we moved to our own building at Leng Kee Road. After a short while, we expanded further by acquiring an additional building at the same location. As our business gained more momentum, we shifted to an office building and warehouse at Tagore Lane in 1979. Subsequently, in 2008, we shifted to our current Sales and Marketing office in Yishun.

3M’s presence in Singapore today includes the Yishun office, the 3M Woodlands Plant, the 3M Singapore R&D Centre, and the 3M Tuas Plant. In addition to serving our customers in Singapore, the company provides sales and support services to Bangladesh, Brunei, Myanmar, and Nepal.

3M Facility at Yishun

3M Singapore markets more than 5,500 products from its sales and marketing operation housed at Yishun. This facility also houses finance, logistics and other support operations.

3M Woodlands Plant
The 3M Singapore Woodlands Plant was at one time the third largest 3M Plant built, with a total floor space of nearly 53,000 m2 and a production floor space of nearly 35,000 m2. This state-of-the-art manufacturing facility started production in October 1998.
With its focus on manufacturing excellence and quality, the Plant won the Singapore Manufacturing Excellence Award – Operational Excellence in 2007, and the Singapore Quality Award – Singapore’s highest accolade for business excellence – in 2003. The Plant also has certification in ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

The Plant manufactures custom flexible circuits, sintered abrasives and electronic adhesives for customers throughout Asia, USA and Europe. 3M’s custom flexible circuits help boost the performance and functionality of Internet servers, computer peripherals, disk drives, cell phones and navigation displays. These circuits help make possible the full-color LCD displays on cell phones, other mobile wireless devices and computer monitors. They also allow ink-jet printers to print high-quality color photographic images, and enable the high-speed data transmission that is essential for broadband communications.

3M Singapore R&D Centre

The vision of the 3M Singapore R&D Centre is to be a major growth driver and leader in new products and technology platforms. With growing research and development work in Singapore, 3M has established two innovation centres at our Woodlands and Yishun sites.

The focus of the Innovation Centre @ Woodlands is on multi-disciplinary research in the areas of electronics, optics, circuitry, adhesive and coatings. This enables 3M to leverage our knowledge in electronics as well as our vast analytical and weathering capabilities. This facility is able to provide predictive and material analysis for many different industries, and is home to 90 research engineers and scientists.

Set up in 2009, the Innovation Centre @ Yishun is currently primarily focused on servicing pharmaceutical firms in the region. This new laboratory investment is a fully cGMP compliant laboratory housing 25 employees. 2010 expansion plans for this site include the addition of hands on product demonstration, customer training, technical product support testing facilities, as well as application development capabilities, supported by 20 employees, for the industrial abrasive, automotive, electrical and telecommunication sectors.

The two 3M Innovation Centres, with a total floor space of up to 7433 m2, are one-stop customer interfaces and facilities where we solve customer problems and work hand in hand with our customers using the 3M total solution approach. This is made possible by housing various 3M products and technology platforms within close proximity with our manufacturing and business functions. This enables closer customer interaction and thus progress in developing solutions for our customers and their customers. Currently there are 20 distinct laboratories, with comprehensive product development and modification capabilities, as well as an environmental-simulation testing site located at Woodlands.

3M Tuas Plant
The 3M Singapore Tuas Plant was built in 2009 with a total floor space of approximately 52,210 m2 and a production floor space of nearly 26,390 m2. This advanced manufacturing facility started production in December 2009 with its first machine producing multilayer, extruded films for solar panel backsheet applications. The plant is planning to have ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification in the second half of 2010.

The Tuas Plant will continue to install new equipment in 2010 and 2011 for the manufacturing of blown micro fiber masks, and optical and window films for customers in Asia, Europe and USA. 3M N95 masks are recognized worldwide as an important component in the fight against H1N1 and other seasonal flu viruses. 3M Vikuiti optical films enable panel manufacturers to provide energy efficient display products with the best brightness and 3M window films reduce energy consumption by preventing heat from entering homes and offices.
