The high-performance perc alternative for motion picture film cleaning
Chlorinated solvents such at perchloroethylene (perc) have been identified as potential carcinogens and hazardous air pollutants by regulatory agencies and local governments. For film cleaning facilities using these chlorinated solvents, this is a cause of concern – both for worker health and safety, and for the long-term sustainability of their process.
3M™ Novec™ 8200 Engineered Fluid is an effective, sustainable alternative to chlorinated solvents, such as perchloroethylene and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA), used as a film cleaner for motion picture film. When used in specially-designed, high speed ultrasonic film cleaning equipment, Novec 8200 fluid demonstrates film cleaning performance equal to or better than perchloroethylene, at a lower cost-in-use.
Novec 8200 fluid exhibits excellent compatibility with a wide range of film substrates, including negative stock, nitrate stock and delicate archival films. The unique properties of Novec 8200 fluid provide an excellent balance of performance, safety and sustainability:
Effective in high-speed film cleaning equipment
Compatible with most film stocks – will not contribute to embrittlement
Nonflammable
Zero ozone depletion potential
Low global warming potential
Exempt from U.S.A EPA definition of a volatile organic compound (VOC)
Not classified as a "Hazardous Air Pollutant" (HAP) – ideal as a perchloroethylene replacement
Listed as a "Clean Air Solvent" by California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD)
